Introduction

Experience Nepal was founded out of a need to help poorer communities in the Katmandu Valley. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and community aid programs. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Nepal. Through this you will gain an in-depth experience of the country and its culture which will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The Placement

In a typical placement, volunteers stay in a family where they get Nepali food twice a day (around 9 o'clock in the morning and 7 o'clock in the evening). The food consists mainly of rice, lentil soup, vegetable/meat curry and pickle. Tea is served early in the morning and in the afternoon. Volunteers will typically eat with family. They will also participate in weddings and festivals. Volunteers can travel to Bhaktapur, Patan or Kathmandu for shopping or to other areas on longer vacation.

The Program Schedule

The volunteer program will commence once you arrive. The duration will be for 2 weeks to 6 months depending on your schedule.

Your placement will be tailored according to your individual needs and interests.  In most instances, volunteers will be placed with local families close to your workplace. Teaching English and Crafts

Volunteers will be required to teach conversational English to Nepali students and may also be required to take students on excursions to use and practice their English. Craft classes are also a successful way to teach English in a less structured class situation. Volunteers will teach for about 2 to 3 hours each day for five or six days a week (Saturday is usually the only day off). They may also be involved in teaching in clubs or groups such as youth clubs for informal education. School children will be 7 to 15 years of age and have a basic to good level of English. Volunteers for this program may also be engaged to help the school teachers with teaching practices and conversational English to enable them to teach English in the future.

Community Health

Community Health programs are available through the Bhaktapur Hospital and various clinics in the Kathmandu Valley. The volunteers will work for about 2 to 3 hours each day for five or six days a week (Saturday is usually the only day off). Volunteers will also be involved in sharing their ideas, skills and knowledge with local NGOs on health issues.  You may also provide first aid information to people in the area. We prefer health professionals such as doctors, nurses, medical students, physiotherapists and optometrists for this program however, we do accept others with some medical or health experience.
