Trekking

At festival time or at any free time, you can elect to visit other parts of Nepal or go trekking. Trekking is a large part of the Nepal experience. The best time to go is at the start of the dry season in October and November when visibility is excellent. December and January is also good but it can be very cold at higher altitudes. The weather is warmer at the end of the dry season in February to April but but visibility is not as good. From April to September is hot and wet and not recommended as good trekking weather.

Whether you are interested in a short or long trek, we advise you to take a local guide for your own safety. We can organize guides from a local reputable trekking agency at about $US 15-25 per day (excluding transportation costs, national park fees and trekking permits).

Transport

Buses are the main method of public transport and you can get to most places by bus. Although somewhat uncomfortable, they are a fun experience. Alternatively, taxis are available at a reasonable price.

Shopping

Thimi is a wonderful place for shopping for a wide range of gifts and souvenirs. Local crafts include pottery, hand-made paper products, rugs, pashminas, papier mache masks and ornaments. You can often watch the local business people making their wares. Tailor-made clothing is well-made and inexpensive. Personal daily items are available such a soaps, shampoos and tissues but you should rely on Kathmandu for other personal items and medicines. Photographic stores can process your memories quickly and cheaply.

Nightlife

Nightlife such as in western culture is limited in Thimi to some festivals celebrations. The main pubs, bars and restaurants are in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
