If you decide to teach conversational English, a certificate for
teaching English to international students (TESOL) is worthwhile but
not essential. As most classes are conducted in English, the
children have a basic understanding of English at a very early age.
Activities about your home country's environment (geography, nature,
cities, industry etc) are a good place to start classes, until you
can assess the level of student capabilities and interest. Or you
may teach English through a special skill, like art or crafts.
Some volunteers teaching English may be asked to prepare listening
and speaking tapes so the students can practice listening to native
English speakers before conversational English exams. English
teachers too often have questions of native English speakers, so you
may be requested to assist English teachers after regular classes.
This is a good opportunity to ask the teachers about certain
students too!
Vocational training in a trade could be very useful for students not
planning to continue with study after class 10. It may even be
useful for a business in the local community.
Computer skills and knowledge are sought after in many areas apart
from schools. Local municipality, local businesses and health
clinics are just some areas that your skills might be useful. Areas
not yet converted to computers can still use organizational skills
and work practices. |
